GRANITE BAY, CA -- Republican Assemblyman Ted Gaines won an impressive victory yesterday for the Republican nomination for the First State Senate District, where a special election was held to replace the late State Senator Dave Cox. Gaines was the top vote-getter, receiving 32.3% of the overall vote. He will face Democrat nominee Ken Cooley in a January 4 run-off.

"I am humbled and very grateful to the voters in the First District for placing their confidence in me," said Gaines. "We campaigned hard in all 12 counties and stuck to our message of lower taxes and limited government. It paid off."

Gaines noted that he has heard from the second place Republican finisher, Roger Niello, and that Niello offered his full support.
